Kidneys along with lungs play a major role in acid base balance of the body.
Lungs are very fast but capacity is limited while kidneys are comparatively slower but their capacity is very high.
Lungs maintain acid base balance by converting HCO3 ions to Co2 which is exhaled.
Kidneys largely reabsorb Na+ ions in exchange of H+ ions which are excreted in urine and imparts acidity to urine.
The H+ ions are also excreted in the form of NH4+ and Hydrogen Phosphate Salts.
